114 Chapter 7 interprofessional skills, students’ feeling of competence is expected to grow, fulfilling the second basic psychological need. The third basic psychological need ‘relatedness’, also called ‘belongingness’, relates to the concept of social capital and the three forms ‘bonding’, ‘bridging’ and ‘linking’ social capital (Figure 7.4). An IPE intervention can stimulate bridging and linking social capital and will possibly also stimulate the feeling of belonginess in an interprofessional team. The feeling of relatedness or belonginess could be achieved by more contact and joint activities between students of different educational programs, such as medicine, nursing, and pharmacy, in IPE interventions. Both SDT and Social Capital Theory emphasize the importance of creating a positive and supportive learning environment for IPE. Both theories underline the importance of the social contact between different professional groups in IPE initiatives. By motivating students and helping them build strong interprofessional relationships, IPE programs can be more effective in promoting interprofessional collaboration. Figure 7.4: The synergy between Social Capital Theory and Self-Determination Theory Limitations This dissertation is subject to some limitations. In our intervention, only nursing and medical students were included. However, a more comprehensive approach could have been achieved by involving a broader range of professional groups, such as students of pharmacy and physical therapy.
