53 Past, present, and future of red blood cells Appendix B – Codebook Historical RBC trends Trend/Theme Drivers/Factors Definition Example quote RBC increased demand This code describes statements made by respondents that specifically stated an increased demand of red cells from certain specialties (e.g. hemato-oncology) or a consistently high demand from certain specialties treating hemoglobinopathies or those aging populations. Although some of these respondents were not from the NL, their responses is also applicable to the Dutch situation (i.e. global statements). In Singapore, our population is aging... So we’ve been doing some of these studies, and we found that, at least in our environment, not that much blood goes to things like trauma. Most of the blood is not even massive transfusions. What’s going up, you see, is one, two unit top-ups for people undergoing cancer. So in a more mature country where the healthcare situation is quite stable, but you have aging population or you have more complex medical therapies, you’ll find the use and the type of blood switches from a hemorrhage-type to more like single unit top-ups because people might go for cancer treatment or hip surgery. Increased demand from specialties This sub-code describes specific medical specialties that have seen increased demand of RBCs due to various treatments. There are some specialties where there’s been an increase, I think. For example, in hematology: with more aggressive treatment, chemotherapy, transplantation, so on, there’s been an increase.
