Called “Seldy” by her family, the name evolved to “Syeldy” at some unbeknownst time. Her family moved often; between the ages of 6-16, she had lived in three countries over three continents. These years shaped in her a love for exploration, adventure, and appreciation of different cultures and food. She attended Dallas Baptist University in Texas and obtained a Bachelor’s in Science degree majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry and English in 2012. Thinking she would attend medical school, she gained experience in medicine by working as a Physician’s Scribe, scribe trainer, regional manager, and project manager in different specialties such as Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and gynecology. After a few years, she realized her passion laid in Global Health research. She received the Orange Tulip Scholarship to attend the Research Master’s Global Health program at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. She moved to Amsterdam in 2015, where she obtained her Research Master’s in Global Health (cum laude) in 2017. It was in the Spring of 2017, during her last master’s internship, that she interned at Sanquin’s Department of Donor Studies and entered the world of blood banking and transfusion medicine, later conducting her PhD under Mart Janssen, Martine de Bruijne, and Hans Zaaijer. Over the years, she has been involved with various societies such as the BEST Collaborative, the European Hematology Association, the European Blood Alliance, and has been very active in the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT). In the ISBT, she has been the European representative of the Young Professional Council (YPC) and worked in the Central Office as the Community Coordinator and Mentorship Programme Coordinator.
