253 General Discussion the foundation for a contextualized scenario development plan for other BEs, even in low-income countries. 7.6 Concluding remarks This thesis explored how the Dutch BE anticipated various external opportunities and threats related to RBCs and Ig and responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. From the differences between RBCs and Ig discussed in Part I, Ig are embedded in a complexity of transformational factors that differ from those for RBCs. While addressing supply and monitoring developments of both products is important, Ig’s growing demand, regulatory factors, and ongoing research and alternative treatments warrant dynamic strategies that differ from those for RBCs. In Part II, our results describe Sanquin in the coping and adaptation stages. As resilience is composed of many attributes, processes, and even interactions, we found that leadership is a vital component as it can activate or deter other aspects.50,55,72,77 In particular, complexity leadership created novelty and success. As Sanquin and other BEs are embedded within complex adaptive systems, it is crucial for these organizations to develop the ability to cope, learn and change as needed in innovative and collaborative ways.78 In conclusion, as organizational resilience is a multi-capability which includes the stages of anticipation, coping, and adaptation, it is not just whether an organization can conduct one or two stages well, but whether it can perform all stages well.48,59,64 As the pandemic has abated, now is the time to reflect and prepare for future opportunities and threats.
