166 Chapter 4 Table S1: Overview of the opportunities, threats, and mitigating measures per theme (indepth version of Table 3 in the main manuscript) (Continued) 6. RBC improvements or alternate applications - This includes opportunities and threats for the improvement of RBCs (e.g. enhanced functions, such as resistance to oxidative stress), alternative uses/applications for RBC (e.g. drug delivery), and miscellaneous related research (e.g. ‘omics’). Opportunities • Improvements of RBC characteristics, applications, and administration Threats • If improvements reduce RBC demand • High costs • Stakeholder perceptions; not agreeing with these other products/components Mitigating measures • Continue Sanquin Research’s partnerships and projects on various RBC improvements, alternative applications, and ‘omics’ studies • Sanquin partners with hospitals and hospital-based research on alternative applications and diagnostics for RBCs • Use the knowledge generated to support other research studies or fields 7. Digitalization - This includes opportunities and threats related to automation, access, and exchange of data (e.g. e-health) and data analytics. Opportunities: • Various methods to increase automation of processes, easy access to and exchange of health data Threat: Data breaches Mitigating measures • To have a very strong, safe and flexible set-up of an IT infrastructure, for both blood banking (e.g. online donor portal) and back-office activities, along with services to external organizations working on the premises • Sanquin creates an online donor portal for all types of blood donors. This portal gives donor accessibility to their blood results, donation history, etc. This portal is connected to local/national databases/ hospital systems • All aspects of blood bank chain are digitalized/ modernized • For Sanquin’s campus idea, Sanquin’s building needs to be modernized (i.e. have capable IT infrastructure at least); this modernization spills over to other aspects of organization as well. • Sanquin collaborates with other organizations on campus for data use and scientific exchange
