165 Mapping opportunities and threats for the future demand of red blood cells in the Netherlands Table S1: Overview of the opportunities, threats, and mitigating measures per theme (indepth version of Table 3 in the main manuscript) (Continued) 5. Change in perception - This includes opportunities and threats related to positive donor perception (and methods of creating this), negative donor perception, and other stakeholders’ perception towards Sanquin. Opportunities • Foster positive perceptions for the general public by giving understanding of what Sanquin is or does • Donors become more aware and connected to Sanquin’s activities • Hospitals and patients are encouraged to purchase Sanquin’s products • All stakeholders will be more actively involved in Sanquin trusting in its not-for-profit standing Threats • General public lose trust in Sanquin’s integrity as an organization, in blood donation, or the use of blood products • All stakeholders lose trust in Sanquin Mitigating measures • Make Sanquin a ‘hot spot’: create added value for donors to donate by giving donors an opportunity to talk to a researcher, tour parts of the facilities, or visit the art gallery • Pamper the donor and ensure a positive and welcoming experience • Increased transparency to the donors and patients regarding research on health, commercial side of donation, the risks of blood transfusion, etc. • Having a holistic ‘Sanquin story’ with intensified communication through diversity of methods: storytelling, more social media outlets, using celebrities • Strengthen the Sanquin brand (e.g. by creating campaigns for schoolchildren and students) • Facilitate provision of social capital as a broadening of blood donation • Offer extensive health checks at the time of donation, but help the donor understand its results rightly (so they don’t overinterpret it). Inform the donor what the health check really is • Consider allowing donors to become scientific donors • Strengthen public participation by creating working groups of Sanquin employees, donors, and patients for decision-making and policy-making purposes • Inform and motivate Sanquin employees to share good news about Sanquin • Lobby policy-makers and set up a professional lobbying group for blood transfusion
