Blood supply organization - This includes opportunities/ threats related to the current blood supply organization, including leadership strengths/weaknesses, national collaborations, internal processes within the organization, innovation aspects, and research. Opportunities: Leadership • Have the right leaders at the right place throughout the organization • Being a driver or key player in innovative processes; being daring to explore what is not yet Collaboration • Strengthen collaboration with hospitals and academic centers for clinical research • Blood donation becomes part of personalized medicine (i.e. personalized donation) • Partner with tech companies, start-ups, or other charitable organizations Internal processes • Strengthen/maintain relationships with customers in the hospitals • Keep supply chain organized and supported • Effective donor management Innovation/research • Use our strengths to be daring to explore what is not yet explored • Continue to give freedom/space for the research department to be innovative Threats: Leadership Wrong people in wrong positions for too long • Lack of (clearly communicating) vision or strategy with a narrow focus on current known factors and processes • Rigid organizational structure that doesn’t account for ready changes in leadership (lack of agility/ flexibility in decision making throughout the entire organization that impacts ability to react quickly or be proactive) Innovation/research • Attempts at innovation fail • Research suffers due to insufficient resources, lack of political support, or perceived lack of need Mitigating measures Stimulate an innovative mentality amongst the leaders and the organization • Board of Directors have a well-defined strategy and focus and communicates that clearly to all levels within Sanquin • Ensure sufficient expertise and experience for individuals with decision-making responsibilities in all levels of the organization and ensure they are recognized and equipped • Open attitude towards new ideas and initiatives (e.g. scientific donors) • Create an agile and flexible organization structure by enhancing communication and collaboration between divisions/departments • Maintain visibility of Sanquin within society • Explore innovative venues such as bio-banking • Create multidisciplinary research teams for all innovative projects to ensure diversity of backgrounds • Ensure relevance and need of research project with close collaboration with the users/clients/patients/ donors by incorporating the perspectives and the values of the patients and donors 2. RBC replacements - This includes opportunities and threats related to alternatives to RBCs and changes in demand of RBCs. Opportunities and threats • Rise of various artificial or cultured products (e.g. universal RBCs, artificial Hb, cultured RBCs, novel drug that mimics RBC functionality) or cellular products or therapies • Surgical technology that decreases blood loss • Decreased demand in human RBCs Mitigating measures • Monitor demand patterns of RBCs and remain aware of changes in different factors that may impact demand • Continue our research on cultured RBCs and partner with medical specialties who are doing projects on alternative products
