149 Mapping opportunities and threats for the future demand of red blood cells in the Netherlands The width or height of the ellipses denote the level of concordance with regards to the importance or uncertainty among the experts; hence, wider or taller ellipses reflect less concordance (i.e., wider IQR) while narrower ellipses denote concordance (i.e., narrow IQR) in relation to the axis (see Figure 4.2 and Supplementary for IQR). In order of descending median importance, these themes were ranked in the following way: 1. Sanquin’s blood supply organization: This ellipse is the smallest in the matrix, reflecting the strong concordance regarding both its importance and uncertainty (Figure 4.2). Thus, the majority of experts ranked this as a driver of moderate-high importance and moderate-high uncertainty with regards to the future demand of RBCs. 2. RBC replacements: This wide ellipse is positioned in the center of the matrix (Figure 4.2); the majority of experts ranked this theme as moderate-highly important yet moderately uncertain. 3. Precision medicine: The size reflects some concordance among experts. Thus, the majority of experts ranked this theme as moderate-highly important with low uncertainty regarding the future demand of RBCs. 4. Commercialization/open EU market: The prominence of this ellipse reflects the wide variance among experts (Figure 4.2). Thus, the majority of experts ranked this theme as diffusely important and diffusely uncertain. 5. Change in perceptions: The size of the ellipse reflects variance among experts regarding its importance yet more concordance regarding its moderate-high uncertainty (Figure 4.2). 6. RBC improvements or alternative applications: This circle is the largest overall and spans nearly the entire width and height of the matrix (Figure 4.2). Thus, there was little-no concordance among experts regarding its importance or uncertainty with regards to the future demand of RBCs. 7. Digitalization: The size and positioning of the ellipse reflect concordance among experts regarding its low-moderate importance and its low-moderate uncertainty (Figure 4.2). 8. Societal context: The narrowness and positioning of the ellipse reflects strong concordance among experts regarding (low) importance yet wide variance in uncertainty (Figure 4.2). 9. Changing legislation: The size and positioning of the ellipse reflects wide variance among experts regarding its importance and uncertainty; this theme had the widest IQR ranges (Figure 4.2).
