115 Systematic review of definitions and outcome measures for postoperative ileus and return of bowel function after abdominal surgery in children Chapter 4 In conclusion we believe that high variation in definitions as well as outcome measures has limited research into postoperative bowel function. Without standardization it will be impossible to compare research results and to evaluate treatments aiming to overcome or reduce postoperative ileus. It seems that there are important differences between children and adults when evaluating postoperative ileus. For these reasons, we believe that a definition for postoperative ileus with an accompanying core outcome set, developed by a multidisciplinary team, specific for children is required. Acknowledgements We would like to thank Marinus Eeftinck Schattenkerk for providing insightful commentary in comparing the adult and pediatric postoperative ileus.
