72 Figure 3.1 Overview of consecutive interviews and focus group discussions with professionals and patients. Arrows indicate that results of earlier phases were validated during later phases. Phase 1: In-depth interviews (n=10) Aim: explore experiences with patients with limited health literacy and their barriers for self-management Phase 2: Focus groups (n=12) Aim: explore experiences with and barriers of strategies to promote self-management in patients with LHL Phase 3: Focus groups + interviews (n=24) Aim: explore HCPs personal needs and recommendations to improve self-management of patients with LHL PROFESSIONALS PATIENTS Phase 1: In-depth interviews (n=12) Aim: explore experiences with and barriers for self-management Phase 2: In-depth interviews (n=16) Aim: explore experiences with and barriers of strategies to promote self-management STUDY PROCEDURE Interviews and FGDs took place between May 2018 and August 2019. Between subsequent phases of data collection was 4-6 months. This ensured that patients likely had met with the HCP again or had had new experiences in their selfmanagement or treatment. It also supported the study phases, illustrated in Figure 3.1. The first phase explored experiences with self-management among patients and HCPs. In the second phase, we explored experiences with strategies to promote self-management. The third phase focused on the HCP’s personal needs to support patients with LHL. In subsequent phases, preliminary results were confirmed or validated. Health care professionals Interviews and FGDs were in Dutch and took place in the HCP examination room or a meeting room of the UMCG. Interviews lasted 30 minutes and FGDs 120 minutes and were audio or video recorded. In phase 3, the interviewer (MDB) ensured both new and known HCPs equally contributed to FGDs, for example by asking to first note their thoughts and then collect and discuss them.
