Can you see the picture a woman, her husband and a doctor. What do you think is happening in this picture? Activities Storytelling: So today I would like to introduce you to the people in this picture. The woman is Thelma and the man is her husband John. In this picture, Thelma has come to see her local doctor. She is here because she is becoming increasingly forgetful. She is having trouble with managing her finances. Communication is also sometimes difficult. She can’t always find the words she wants to say. Her doctor has just put her through a range of tests. In this picture - the doctor is giving her some news. He is giving her a diagnosis. ‘Thelma – you have dementia’. I want you to try and put yourself in Thelma’s place for a moment. ‘Thelma – you have dementia’ Individual projection: So I want you to look at this picture and keep trying to imagine what it is like for Thelma. What is she feeling at this moment? What is she thinking? What questions does she have? Please take a minute or two to write down the first few things that come to your mind. Telephone: I will keep quiet to give you time to think and note down answers. Online: I will turn of my microphone to give you time to think and note down answers, you cannot hear me, I will still be able to hear you. [1 min]. What have you written down? [Listen as they share their ideas with you and make notes]. Do you have any other thoughts to add? [Prompt around emotions as well as thoughts] Supports/Ideal World: So you have shared some of your ideas about what Thelma might be experiencing. So, I now wondering, in an ideal world, what the doctor should do at this time to support Thelma? What should he say? What should he do? Is there anything he shouldn’t say or do? [Prompts: What types of services? Information? Resources? Who else might have a role to play?] Care Plan: Would it be useful to Thelma to receive support to make a plan for what should come next? Aim To recreate and immerse the participant into Thelma’s ‘diagnostic’ moment. The participant should be encouraged to be ‘in’ the moment portrayed in the story. The interviewer should read the story in such a way as to engage the participant in the situation. Activities Read the story Introduce the selfreflection activity.
