| 132 Appendices Appendix A. Discussion guide for participants Skills/training This interview guide has been designed for use by experienced researchers or clinicians. The guide assumes that users will have experience and skills in interview moderation and supporting interview dynamics. It also assumes some experience and skills in the provision of support for people with dementia. The interviews may provoke emotional responses. So the interviewer should be equipped with active listening skills and an ability to debrief the participant. Resources The interviewer: an audio recorder, a copy of the participant Handouts and demographic Qs, paper and pens to make notes and Support Information Sheet. Participant resources: handouts, demographic information sheet, consent form, research information sheet. For online interviews, resources also include an explanation sheet for ZOOM and a mobile device with internet connection (and preferably a webcam/camera) to enter the online interview. Supporting discussions using interview Resources Participant Handouts will be used during the interview with the participant. The interview uses ‘projective techniques’ to promote manageability and focus on the interview topics. Completion and mind mapping exercises around ‘key words’ of ‘dementia’ and ‘support’ will provide an opportunity for the participant to think through and record their thoughts on a worksheet. The projections of the participant will ultimately reveal their understanding of expected ‘norms’ around the diagnostic and post-diagnostic experience for the person being diagnosed. For example - a participant might say ‘I think Thelma might feel overwhelmed because that is how I felt’. They
