113 Maxillary implant overdentures: retreatment after failure 7.3 RESULTS Between 2008 and 2018, 16 patients were referred following complete failure of their maxillary implant retained FDP or overdenture. All the implants failed due to severe peri-implantitis. Patient characteristics are depicted in Table 7.1. One patient with six implants could not be evaluated because of invalidating illness during evaluation, and was lost to follow-up. Consequently, 15 patients (5 men and 10 women (mean age: 64 years old, range 41 – 75) agreed to participate in this retrospective study. The participants were evaluated after a mean follow-up of 3.3 years (range: 1.1 – 8.6 years). Complications Surgical complications were limited to perforations of the Schneiderian membrane which were closed with bone blocks and did not intervene in the reconstructive procedure. Post-operative complications were limited to wound dehiscence and local abscess formation (Table 7.2). All complications were resolved and had no consequences for further treatment.
